How To Get A No-Fee Wal-Mart MoneyCard

Posted by George Pasley on July 31, 2007

Maybe banks and credit unions have something to fear from Wal-Mart after all. It seems that Wal-Mart has finally figured out how to bank the un-banked. I must admit, this new MoneyCard is a stroke of genius. There have been plenty of articles, such as here, that hint to Wal-Mart showing their evilness with the new MoneyCard. Personally, I don’t see anything bad.

There is talk of the excessive fees for pretty much everything. Want a paper statement? That will be a $2.00 fee. ATM balance inquiry? $0.75. There is also the $4.94 monthly maintenance fee and the $4.64 fee for each reload that is a non-check cashing transaction at a Wal-Mart.

Comments on the articles have likened Wal-Mart as another evil, fee-happy “bank”. What they missed is there are no overdraft fees. Overdraft fees account for almost 40% of the fee income for banks and credit unions. From what I’ve seen, it’s the overdraft fees and bounced checks that get customers into trouble in the first place. Wal-Mart’s MoneyCard helps alleviate that problem.

Now, how does one use this card with no fees? Just do the following:

  1. Opt out of the Temporary card. If you wait to receive your card in the mail, you’ll avoid the $8.94 temporary card fee.
  2. Always reload the card through check cashing or direct deposit (I believe direct deposit is treated the same as check cashing) and avoid a $4.64 fee.
  3. Avoid using ATMs and get cash back when you make a purchase. Buying a $.25 pack of gum is a lot less than the $1.95 ATM withdrawal fee, plus you get something tangible.
  4. Check your balance and review your statement by going online at www.walmartmoneycard.com to avoid a $0.75 ATM balance inquiry and $2.00 paper statement fee.
  5. There are no fees for neither pin nor signature debit charges.
  6. No monthly maintenance fee of $4.94 if you load more the $1000 each month.
  7. No overdraft fees since you can only spend what’s on the card.

There you have it. I’m a little surprised that no major bank or credit union thought of doing this. Because there is no credit check, this opens up “banking” to a lot of non-banking people. The MoneyCard shows that innovation doesn’t necessarily mean something related to technology. Sometimes, you just need to give the people what they want.

  1. And add to that the partnership between WalMart and http://www.sharebuilder.com and you have a pretty good “offer” working there.

Very true. I’ve been looking at using Sharebuilder myself.

You got my attention with the posting on the Walmart moneycard. I am trying to do without a bank account and thought this would be a good idea. I have a check being sent by Paypal in my personal name I sold a puppy through paypal but now I’m asking myself how am I going to cash it? So if I use your advise and use the moneycard in lieu of a regular bank in paypal and ebay I could have just had it deposited into the moneycard bank and just withdraw from the card.
Is my thinking correct, that this is what you meant?????

    Gayl,
I think that is correct. I don’t know if Walmart has changed how their card works, however.

How do I do this? Just go into the store, and tell them I’d like to sign up for the Wal-Mart Money Card, but I don’t want to buy the temporary card? Or is there some number to call?

    Jonathan,
I’m not sure. I haven’t actually gotten a MoneyCard, but I just assume you can tell them you don’t want a temporary card when you sign up.

The Wal-Mart Money Card has been a bust for Wal-Mart. Do the math and you can see why. They claim they’ve sold 2 million cards in two years, and loaded $2 billion on the cards. Sounds like a lot, right? Well, that is less than one card sold per day, per store. And, $2 billion works out to just $1,000 in deposits per card. Since people probably deposit their paycheck onto the card, about $150, that means most people probably use the card for a month or two, then ditch it for a bank account. Wal-Mart just lowered the upfront fee from $9 to $3 to try to save the product, hoping the various usage fees make up for the lost fees.

This card WAS a good idea. I pay $3 per month to keep my money. If I go to a bank, I’d be charged a fee about the same because I won’t meet minimum balance for “fee-free” checking. Its like I make $9 less because I pay $3 per paycheck to deposit (2x monthly) and $3 for upkeep fee. As long as I have $100 on the card, I see fees as no problem.
